As a leading global provider of ingredients and solutions for the food industry, we at Puratos are dedicated to sustainability and responsible business practices. We are working hard on lowering the environmental footprint of our products and organization as a whole.
In line with our objective to become a zero-waste-to-landfill company worldwide by 2030, we take concrete actions to reduce the amount of single-use plastic in our operations, reuse packaging materials as much as possible, and make all packaging materials fully recyclable by 2025. The three R’s are the foundation of our waste-reduction efforts.
As part of this undertaking, we will be introducing packaging transformations and making significant progress in our journey towards a waste-free future.
Following the guidelines from recognized international trade organizations and thought leaders in the area of sustainable packaging such as RecyClass, Ceflex and 4evergreen, we are taking a huge step forward and changing the design of our product packaging, making it more sustainable and more convenient for our customers.
While many of our product packaging types are already recyclable, such as the buckets used for our compound chocolate and fruit fillings, we are making various changes to the other packaging types and designing them to be recyclable.
Many of our products, such as Belcolade, Smoobees, Softgrain, and others, come in flexible plastic bags and pouches. We are upgrading these packaging materials to have a mono-material structure, which means they are made from a single type of material rather than a combination of materials. This has a big benefit: it can be more easily recycled because it can be sorted and processed at recycling facilities more efficiently, reducing waste in landfills and lowering the environmental impact of our products. In addition, it can be more cost effective for our customers to recycle.
When it comes to powder bags used for many bakery mixes and improvers, the new packaging will be smartly designed to easily separate the paper and polyethylene layers, allowing for easy recycling. This ensures that our products maintain their high level of food safety and production while also being sustainable.
Our new packaging will also be produced in a more sustainable way, using fewer chemicals and less energy, and be made from certified sustainable raw materials where possible, such as FSC-certified paper when it comes to our widely-used powder bag packaging.
We evolve our packaging to follow a unified design, which comes with a range of benefits for the planet: 100% unbleached paper, single-color print, up to 70% reduced ink usage, less energy consumed and reduced waste. These and many other changes will significantly reduce the environmental footprint of our products, helping you - our customers - improve your sustainability credentials.
But we didn't forget about functionality either. Our new packaging will include features like the easy-opening food safety system in our powder-based ingredient bags, which helps guarantee hygiene in food processing environments, prevents contamination during bag opening and reduces food waste. Our pouch-like packaging is going to be designed with the idea of making it easy to stack on pallets without the use of extra corrugated packaging and easy to empty completely, which also results in food waste reduction.
Many of our products, such as Sproutgrain, Smoobees and Cubease, are already offered in this functional and more sustainable packaging. This innovation will be further expanded to other products, bringing us closer to achieving our sustainability objectives.
To help our customers reduce the environmental footprint of their products even further, we make a change to our secondary packaging also. Our products will soon be delivered in boxes made of unbleached paper, developed using recycled pulp and with reduced ink usage.
We also recognize the importance of pooling, or using durable reusables instead of disposable single-use packaging, for both inbound and outbound secondary packaging. That’s what we are implementing in many markets around the world. After receiving our products in rigid, convenient and safe packaging, it’s then returned for re-use. Reusable packaging requires fewer raw materials to manufacture and therefore reduces CO2 emissions and our overall environmental impact, striking a balance between being sustainable and convenient for you.
At Puratos, we are making major strides towards sustainable packaging, with a focus on both the environment and customer convenience. Our commitment to making all our packaging materials fully recyclable or reusable by 2025 demonstrates our dedication to sustainability and responsible business practices.
We sincerely invite our customers to dispose our product packaging in accordance with the local sorting rules and requirements. Let’s move the planet forward together by reducing the amount of waste, reusing and recycling as much as possible!
